Residents benefitting from safer roads thanks to Build PEI

* Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal [to May 2015]
Key investments in Prince Edward Island's road and bridge infrastructure have resulted in improved safety and efficiency for Island drivers and transport companies, says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Ron MacKinley.

“Through the Build PEI initiative we've been able to address priority areas like Route 2 in Richmond, Route 1 North Tryon and Greek River Bridge on Route 17,” said Minister MacKinley. “Projects like these can have a noticeable impact on the safety and efficiency of the province’s road network.”

So far this construction season, the department has tendered, commenced or completed construction on four bridge replacements as well as reconstruction or repaving on approximately 60 kilometers of roadway. Some of the key projects underway now include the replacement of Ross' Corner Bridge on Route 1a, reconstruction of the last section of Route 2 without paved shoulders in Bristol and repaving on Route 2 in Bloomfield.

“Since 2007, this department has invested approximately $202 million in new and improved road and bridge infrastructure from one end of the Island to the other,” said Minister MacKinley. “This has resulted in major repairs or replacements on 34 bridges and the repaving or reconstruction of over 700 kilometers of roadway. Whether it’s through our comprehensive bridge inspection program, or through the continuous monitoring of our existing road network, we are always looking at ways to improve safety and efficiency on Island roads.”
