Road construction tenders announced today worth approximately $5.5 million will result in smoother, safer roads and improved highway infrastructure for Island drivers, says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Robert Vessey.
“The province has set aside $38 million to improve roads and bridges on Prince Edward Island in 2012,” says Minister Vessey. “The projects included in this first round of tenders will improve road surfaces, to make them safer for drivers, and will address aging highway infrastructure like the Wellington Bridge.”
The bridge on Route 124 in Wellington was built in 1956 and is reaching the end of its service life. The new bridge will include a longer concrete span as opposed to the steel structure currently in place. Other projects in the first round of tenders include:
• Resurfacing of approximately 6.2 kilometers of Route 2 in various locations across the province.
• Resurfacing of approximately 1.7 kilometers of Route 3 in Millview.
• Resurfacing of approximately 1.3 kilometers of Route 1 in North Tryon.
• Various other resurfacing projects.
“By improving the condition and durability of road surfaces, drivers face fewer hazards like potholes and frost heaves,” said Minister Vessey. “This greatly improves the safety of the roadway by reducing driver workload and it also helps decrease damage to vehicles.”
