Updated regulations will ensure these activities continue to thrive on Prince Edward Island, says Minister of Communities, Land and Environment Robert Mitchell.
“Each year, our department hears from Island hunters and trappers as to regulation changes they feel require updating. These changes increase participation opportunities and ensure the traditions of hunting and trapping continue in a safe and effective manner,” said Minister Mitchell. “This year four updates will be made to the Wildlife Conservation Act at the request of hunters and trappers. I would like to remind those participating in these activities to ensure they are aware of the updated regulations.”
The following changes will be made to the Wildlife Conservation Act:
• The closing date for snowshoe hare hunting has been moved to March 31(from Feb 28).
• The opening date for snowshoe hare snaring has been moved to November 1 (from Nov 15).
• The closing date for mink trapping has been moved to March 31(from Feb 28).
• Licensed fur harvesters are permitted to discharge a .22 rimfire rifle to humanely dispatch a trapped animal after dark.
The Government of Prince Edward Island appreciates the role hunters and trappers play in wildlife conservation. These activities provide a way for many Island families to stay connected to the outdoors and experience the wide range of wildlife habitat our Island has to offer.
In addition to the recommended changes by hunters and trappers, regulations around muskrat and weasel traps are also being updated. These changes are in accordance with the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards that requires the exclusive use of certified traps for certain furbearer species. Several additional muskrat and weasel traps have been certified for use over the past year and therefore regulations will be updated to allow their use on P.E.I.
