Regulations For "Buffer Areas" Renewed

The Hon. Mitchell Murphy, Minister of Community Affairs and Attorney General, announced the renewal of the temporary regulations governing building and development in the four special planning areas or "buffer areas" adjacent to the municipalities of Stratford, Charlottetown, Cornwall and Summerside. The renewal extends the application of the regulations for an additional period of up to 12 months. These temporary regulations limit the creation of subdivisions not serviced by the sewage system of a municipality to one lot for residential use, one commercial or industrial lot for agricultural, forestry or fisheries purposes, and commercial or industrial subdivisions of one lot per existing parcel of land containing one acre or less.

Minister Murphy stated that the renewal of the temporary regulations is necessary to enable government to examine the report of the Round Table on Resource Lands which is due at the end of this month. Also, in light of recent land use conflicts which have arisen and caused much public attention, Government feels more time is necessary to gather all available information and fully examine the issue of rural land uses and their effects on urban development and vice versa.
