The "Red Oak for Island Newborns" program launched in 2001 has been a success and will continue in 2002 announced the Agriculture and Forestry Minister Mitch Murphy. The continuation of this program was announced as part of the Department's 2002 Environment Week celebrations.
"I was very pleased to see so many Islanders choosing to pick up a Red Oak seedling at our offices and plant them to signify the birth of these ‘new' Islanders," said Mr. Murphy. "Red Oak is the Island's Provincial Tree and represents growth, strength, and longevity, so this program connects the natural symbols of Prince Edward Island with its newest citizens."
The special Red Oak certificates are distributed by Welcome Wagon through the Baby Welcome Program and are also available through selected forestry offices. The certificate entitles parents, or a designate, to pick up a free red oak seedling to mark this special occasion. Each certificate has an area to mount a 4 X 6 photo of the tree planting, as well as planting instructions and a brief overview of the importance of Red Oak to PEI.
These specially grown Red Oak seedlings are available in May and June through the Forestry offices in Southampton and Wellington and at the J. Frank Gaudet Tree Nursery in West Royalty. Parents can call the appropriate office ahead of time to ensure that supplies are in stock and bring their certificate with them when they come to pick up the seedling.
For people who live in apartments or other areas where tree planting may not be suitable, the department has set aside several special planting areas on Provincial Forests where people can plant their red oak seedling and be assured that it will be there to see and enjoy for many years to come.
