Mitch Murphy, Minister of Technology and Environment recently announced the recipients of the 1999 Prince Edward Island Environmental Awards. The awards are presented each year and recognize and honour Islanders for their special commitment to the environment. Nominations for the awards are received from Islanders with the winners selected by the PEI Environmental Advisory Council (EAC).
In presenting the winners with their awards, Minister Murphy praised them for the energy and commitment they bring to their environmental efforts. " While each recipient has undertaken a different type of activity all have clearly shown the difference that taking action can make for our environment," said the Minister. "They have made a difference to our Island environment and I am very pleased to honour these individuals and organizations for their efforts."
Honoured this year for their environmental endeavours:
Business: Printer Works (Laser Solutions Inc.)
Education: Charlottetown Rural Envirothon Team, Charlottetown
Individual Citizen: Dennis Hopping, Mill's Point
Organization: Bedeque Bay Environmental Management Association
Youth: Georgetown Environmental Team, Georgetown Elementary School
While citing the winners for their work, the Minister noted that all across Prince Edward Island, individuals, groups and businesses show concern and take action to preserve and enhance the environment. "Our award recipients are deserving of recognition, but I would also like to take the opportunity to recognize the hundreds of committed individuals, businesses, educators and citizen groups that work tirelessly to protect our environment. They are also deserving of recognition and our thanks," said Mr. Murphy. The Minister encouraged all Islanders to continue their efforts to protect the Island environment.
