Who grew the biggest pumpkin in Prince Edward Island in 2004? That question will be answered this coming Saturday when growers lug their entries to the annual giant pumpkin grower’s competition at the Silver Bells Christmas Tree Farm in Springvale. The competition is sponsored by the Prince Edward Island Giant Pumpkin Growers Association.
“This event is a lot of fun and generates a great deal of friendly competition,” said Gordon Aten, president of the association. “A couple of new growers are expected this year so it will be very interesting to see if any records will be broken.”
There were about 30 entries last year. The first place giant pumpkin, exhibited by Clifford Picketts of Kensington, weighed in at 1017 pounds. The first place giant squash, weighing 766 pounds, was exhibited by Al Hammond of Cornwall. Matthew Boswall of Marshfield was the first place winner for field pumpkins.
Exhibitors must have their entries registered by 10:30 on Saturday morning. The weigh-off begins at 12 noon.
The first competition was held in 1994, and was organized by Dr. Jim Murphy. The association was established in 2001.
