Queen's Counsel Appointments

The Honourable Mitch Murphy, Attorney General, announced today that at its meeting of December 15, 1998, Executive Council appointed the following lawyers as Queen's Counsel: Diane Campbell of Summerside, Rosemary Scott of Charlottetown, James Travers of Charlottetown, and Marlene Clark of Mount Stewart.

Diane Campbell is a sole practitioner in Summerside. She graduated from the University of New Brunswick with her law degree and from Harvard Law School with a Masters in Law. She is a former member of the Law Society Council and various discipline committees.

Rosemary Scott is a senior partner in the law firm of Stewart McKelvey Stirling Scales in Charlottetown. She graduated with her law degree from Dalhousie University in 1979 and was admitted to the PEI Bar in 1980. Her preferred areas of practice include labour and employment, charter and human rights, and administrative law.

James Travers practices in Charlottetown also as a senior partner in the firm of Stewart McKelvey Stirling Scales. He has been an active supporter of the Children's Wish Foundation and serves on its national executive.

Marlene Clark is a sole practitioner in Mount Stewart specializing in legal research and litigation assistance. She is a graduate of Prince of Wales College, Dalhousie University and UNB Law School. She is currently chair of the Industrial Relations Council for PEI.

The recommendation for appointment of Queen's Counsel is made to the Lieutenant Governor in Council by a committee composed of the President of the Law Society, a member of the Law Society appointed by the Council of the Law Society, a person appointed by the Attorney General, a Justice of the Supreme Court, and a Judge of the Provincial Court. To be nominated by the committee, the nominee must have been a member of the Law Society for a period of at least 10 years.

The appointment of a Queen's Counsel recognizes the ability and dedication to the legal profession of the appointee and permits the use of the letters "Q.C." after the lawyer's name.
