Islanders are encouraged to celebrate their love of reading during TD Canadian Children’s Book Week, says Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Vessey.

“Events such as this help foster a child’s commitment to lifelong reading,” said the Minister. “Our public libraries play an important role in literacy efforts in our province and I invite all Islanders to participate in the upcoming activities.”

TD Canadian Children’s Book Week is April 30 to May 7. Canadian children’s book author, Maggie de Vries, will visit Island schools and libraries to discuss her books and the writing process. She will also hold four public readings:

• Confederation Centre Public Library, Monday, May 2, 10:30 a.m.;

• Kinkora Public Library, Tuesday, May 3, 11 a.m.;

• Summerside Rotary Library, Tuesday, May 3, 3:30 p.m.; and

• Mount Stewart Public Library, Wednesday, May 4, 10:30 a.m.

The theme for this year’s week is Changing the World, One Child at a Time. The theme will focus on books that highlight children and teens who are working to make the world a better place in their community, country or abroad.
