The provincial government is asking Islanders to share their views on proposed automobile insurance reforms, says Environment, Labour and Justice Minister Janice Sherry.
“My department has been working closely with the insurance industry to improve benefits and bring them in line with the rest of the region, “ said Minister Sherry. “While benefits are increased under these proposed reforms, we have received a commitment from the industry that rates will not increase.”
There are two major changes. The cap on court awards for pain and suffering from minor personal injuries will be increased from $2,500 to $7,500. As well, the definition of minor personal injuries will be amended to include only strains, sprains and
whiplash-associated disorders that do not result in a serious impairment. The second major proposal is to raise the amounts of no-fault accident benefits to New Brunswick levels.
The department has published a consultation paper on the proposed reforms. It is available online at www.gov.pe.ca/consultations. Paper copies are available by calling 368-6288.
