Public Health Nursing Office Welcomes Summer Nurse Camp Students

Earlier this week, the public health nursing office in Charlottetown welcomed students from grades 5 and 6 who are taking part in the UPEI School of Nursing summer Nurse Camp.

“The nurse camp provides a wonderful opportunity for young Islanders to learn about the nursing profession in various areas of practice such as public health, nutrition, and speech and audiology,” said Minister Bertram. “These students have the unique opportunity of visiting some of our health care facilities and learning basic nursing skill sets that will continue to encourage their interest in pursuing a career in nursing some day.”

This is the third year the public health nursing office in Charlottetown has partnered with the university’s School of Nursing to offer the site visit as part of the camp. During their visit, students met with public health staff, learned about the day-to-day responsibilities, went through a number of interactive stations and even did some role playing as public health nurses.

“We are very proud to participate in the Nurse Camp and for the opportunity to provide students with hands-on experience in public health,” said Valerie Nicholson, Public Health Coordinator. “The services we offer are wide-ranging and it’s important for those interested in the nursing profession to learn more about them and understand all of the employment options within the health field.”

PEI Public Health Nursing provides services to clients across their life span in areas related to illness prevention, health promotion, and disease detection and treatment.
