The Minister of Community Services and Attorney General, Wes MacAleer, today announced that the provincial Millennium Committee has determined a winner of the Millennium Logo Contest which was held this spring.
The Committee received many submissions and were extremely impressed by the quality of the work received and the time and effort that was put into all of the submissions. "The decision-making process was a difficult one given the number of excellent portrayals of the theme," noted Bud Whelan, Chair of the Committee. "We narrowed the field down as a group and then voted on which piece best represented 'PEI 2000: Inspired by our Past, Embracing Our Future.' As a group, we are very happy with the result and we think the people of Prince Edward Island will be too."
The winning submission, revealed at a news conference at the Lecture Theatre of Province House today, was displayed for viewing and the winner, Laura O'Brien, accepted a cheque for $1,000 as a prize from Minister MacAleer. Laura has just completed her first year of the Commercial Design course at Holland College.
Minister MacAleer noted that, "The Committee will be working towards recognizing Prince Edward Island as the birthplace of Canada. The activities that they participate in will stimulate interest in communities, large and small, and bring all Islanders, including our youth, together to support the development and evolution of these communities."
The Committee also announced that they are now accepting submissions for proposals for projects that may be supported by the organizing committee. The Committee's goal is to provide opportunities for communities and individuals to present their ideas with the potential of acquiring support from the organizing committee.
The Committee is very encouraged by the enthusiasm of Islanders and, if the logo contest is any indication, Prince Edward Island is going to be an exciting place to be as we enter the next millennium.
