Provincial Heritage Fair Presents Windows on the Past

* Tourism and Culture [to May 2015]
Over 200 students from across Prince Edward Island gathered at the Provincial Heritage Fair recently to present their unique exhibits on the history of Prince Edward Island, Canada and the world.

Drawing on family and community resources, as well as primary and secondary reference sources, the students pursued their interest in the lifestyles, artifacts, activities and events of the past.

Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Vessey praised the students for their accomplishments. “I saw an incredible demonstration of cultural diversity and history that is very personal and meaningful for each student who participated,” he said. “The heritage fair allows students to learn much from the past and from one another.”

Awards were presented for top projects in each grade level and in specialty areas.

The Canada’s History Medals went to Austin Murnaghan of Donagh Regional School for his project on the “Naufrage Lighthouse” and to Marie-Hélène Cormier of École François-Buote for “Les produits d’érable.”

The McCain Literacy Awards were presented to Hannah Hardy of Elm Street Elementary for her presentation on “The Life of Robert Campbell” and to Monica Furness of Vernon River Consolidated for “The Land Question.”

The winners of the 2010 “Stamp Stories” contest for stamp design were Vanessa Germain, Souris Consolidated; Alexandra Rankin, Eliot River Elementary; and Emma MacPhail, also of Eliot River. Winning designs can be viewed on-line at www.HeritageFairs.ca.
