Provincial Government Will Oppose Establishment

Premier's Office
Premier Pat Binns today advised that the Government of Prince Edward Island is opposed to exotic dancing being offered at any licensed establishments.

The Premier confirmed government’s position in response to discussion that such a facility is being proposed at the old Mount Pleasant Flying Club.

“I believe all Islanders should be concerned about the impact of such establishments on our communities,” said Binns. “Our government will be asking the Liquor Control Commission to impose restrictive conditions if a liquor license is offered to the Mount Pleasant facility.”

The Prince Edward Island Liquor Control Commission licenses and regulates the establishment and operation of bars and lounges in the province. It is a commission independent of government.

Government has been advised that the Liquor Control Commission has not yet received an application for the Mount Pleasant facility. However, the commission has solicited opinion from area residents and would utilize that input to determine the acceptability of any future application.

The Premier cautioned that the will of government might not be the last word as the courts have increasingly defined such rights. However, the provincial government will strongly oppose such activity.
