Provincial government provides support to the Salvation Army

Government is pleased to provide continued support to the Salvation Army Home Heating Assistance Program, says Community Services, Seniors and Labour Minister, Janice Sherry.

“The Salvation Army program has met a critical need over the past number of years by providing emergency assistance to Islanders who have no other means for heating their homes,” said the minister.

The Department of Community Services, Seniors and Labour is donating $78,000 to the program this year. There is $30,000 remaining from last year’s donation of $108,000.

The Salvation Army Home Heating Assistance Program helps Islanders in crisis who have run out of home heating oil during the winter months. Through the program, Prince Edward Island residents who show an urgent need can have up to 300 litres of home heating oil delivered to their homes beginning in January of 2011.

“We realize the great need that exists for many families in our community and we are pleased to partner once again with the Province, a variety of local businesses and private citizens to address this need,” said Ian Scott, Charlottetown Salvation Army. “At the same time, we also need to ensure that we are helping those most at risk in our community. We will try to ensure that this remains an emergency source of home heating for those who need it most.”

Co-op Fuels is a partner in the program once again this year. By matching their members’ donations, the company donated over $5,000 to the Salvation Army last year.

Residents of Queens and Kings Counties can reach the Salvation Army at (902) 892-8870 and people in Prince County should call (902) 888-3870.
