A provincial government investment of $161,000 is being used to renovate the Belfast Fire Hall and the Belfast Highland Greens, says Belfast-Murray River MLA Charlie McGeoghegan on behalf of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Neil LeClair.

“This investment will enhance the ability of the fire department to perform its duties and allow the golf course to accommodate its growing customer base,” said Mr. McGeoghegan. “We are pleased to work in partnership with these two organizations to improve services and facilities for area residents and visitors.”

The total cost of the two projects is $205,000.

The Belfast fire department fire hall needs to upgrade some of its equipment and expand its building to accommodate the needs of the volunteer firefighters. The total cost of this project is $129,000. The Island Community Fund is contributing $90,000 to this project.

The Belfast Highland Greens needs additional event hosting capacity and has added a 36 x 40 extension to its clubhouse which will also be used for storage during the off-season. The total cost of the project is $76,000. The Island Community Fund is contributing $40,000 to this project. Skills PEI will be contributing $31,000.

“I am pleased to congratulate the sponsors of these projects for their initiative, and wish them every success on their completion,” said Mr. McGeoghegan. “These projects reflect the commitment of the provincial government to meeting the needs of rural communities and their residents.”

The Island Community Fund is a six-year $27.5 million program established by the provincial government to address infrastructure needs with a focus on rural communities.
