The City of Charlottetown continues the work necessary to complete the construction of the Miltonvale wellfield and connect the new system thanks to significant funding announcements from the Federal and Provincial government.

The City has received funding from the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund, which will allow for the completion of the following projects:

Miltonvale Wellfield Transmission and Distribution:

This project consists of installing the water supply pipes from the new wellfield into the City of Charlottetown at a projected cost of $5.25 million. Duffy Construction Limited has been awarded the construction tender and Cole Associates are providing consulting engineering services.

Miltonvale Wellfield Mechanical and Electrical:

This project will provide the equipment and electrical supply for the new wellfield, including pumps and treatment systems at a projected cost of $2.8 million. WM&M Limited has been awarded the construction tender and Cole Associates are providing consulting engineering services.

The Federal Government will cover 50 per cent of the total cost of the projects with the Province and the City each contributing 25 per cent.

“These water supply infrastructure projects are a continuation of our sustainability goal to improve our water resource management,” said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. “With funding from our government partners, Council’s commitment to making this a priority and the support of the public, this new wellfield will soon be a reality.”

Once completed, the five new wells in the community of Miltonvale Park, will pump about 4,000 litres per minute and supply one-quarter of Charlottetown's water supply, easing the strain on the Winter River Watershed.

“This new wellfield site allows us to continue to provide water supply services to the residents of Charlottetown,” said Councillor Edward Rice, Chair of the City’s Water and Sewer Utility Committee. “I’m so proud to have served as Chair of the Water and Sewer Utility these last few years. With our many water conservation initiatives that residents have been actively engaged in, and all of the work that’s been done to improve our services, we’ve come such a long way. I’d like to thank the public, our staff, Council and our funding partners for their cooperation and support.”

“The Government of Canada recognizes that a solid partnership with all orders of government is integral to supporting infrastructure projects that support the middle class and those working hard to join it, now and into the future,” said MP Wayne Easter, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. “I’m very pleased to see Phase I of Investing in Canada at work in Prince Edward Island, supporting clean water and waste water projects that will contribute to the long-term health and prosperity of Islanders for generations to come.”

“Projects like the Miltonvale Wellfield support job creation and boost economic development. This is why the Government of Canada is providing unprecedented funding for public infrastructure projects that promote sustainable development and long-term prosperity here in Charlottetown and in communities across the country," said MP Sean Casey.

“Investments in strategic infrastructure such as this build stronger communities, grow our economy and protect our environment. We are pleased to partner with the federal government and the City of Charlottetown to support projects that provide essential services to Islanders,” said Honourable Paula Biggar, Minister of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy.

“The development of a new wellfield based in Miltonvale is good news for the sustainability of the Charlottetown water system and for the protection of our local watersheds. Through this support, the provincial government is protecting the interests of Islanders and the environment,” said Bush Dumville, MLA for West Royalty-Springvale.
