Strengthening economic ties between Prince Edward Island and Saint-Pierre et Miquelon was discussed at a meeting between Premier Robert Ghiz and President Stéphane Artano this week.
“The Government of Prince Edward Island is pleased to welcome officials from Saint-Pierre et Miquelon to our province,” said Premier Robert Ghiz, the Minister responsible for Acadian and Francophone Affairs. “Our respective regions have a lot in common. Traditional industries such as fishing have created jobs and economic wealth on our respective islands for generations. We are also embarking on a new economic path and exploring ways to strengthen and diversify our economies.”
The introductory meeting included an overview of the economy and key sectors of each region. Officials also discussed exploring business development and export opportunities with the European Union through Saint-Pierre et Miquelon.
Hon. Allan Campbell, Prince Edward Island’s Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning, also participated in the meeting.
“Prince Edward Island is interested in building relationships with Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, France and the entire European Union,” said Minister Campbell. “Our government looks forward to continuing discussions with President Artano to explore potential areas for cooperation and economic development.”
Saint-Pierre et Miquelon is an Overseas Territory of France. The islands are situated south of Newfoundland and Labrador and have a population of just over 7,000 people. They are governed by their own Territorial Council which has authority in promoting the social and economic development in the territory.
