Province seeking input on new Municipal Government Act

Communities, Land and Environment
A new webpage and in-person consultation sessions will invite public feedback on new municipal legislation, says Minister of Communities, Land and Environment Robert Mitchell.

“Work continues on the development of a new Municipal Government Act for Prince Edward Island. Today we launched an online forum where municipalities and the public can review proposed legislative changes and provide their input directly to the department,” said Minister Mitchell.

“Department staff will also be leading face-to-face consultation with municipal councils across the Island this month seeking their knowledge and input. We want to ensure this legislation supports municipalities and allows them to achieve a high level of efficiency and effectiveness.”

Beginning today, Islanders can find background information, details of proposed changes and feedback options by visiting www.princeedwardisland.ca/mga. Deadline for public consultation is Friday, October 7. In-person consultation with councils will take place throughout the last two weeks of September. Councils can expect invitations in the coming week with further details.

“I encourage all Islanders to review the information provided online over the next month and assist us with this important piece of legislation,” added Minister Mitchell.

The new Municipal Government Act is expected to be introduced in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island this fall.
