Province to Reinstate Axle Tolerances

Transportation and Public Works Minister, Don MacKinnon, today announced that axle tolerances will be reinstated on Island roads effective May 20, 2002 at 12:01 a.m.

The removal of axle tolerances on Island roads is part of the continuing overall effort to minimize impacts from spring thawing cycles. Typically, axle tolerances are removed closer to the end of May; however, technical analysis of road integrity this year has shown a stronger than usual recovery due in part to the dry spring and the increased cooperation of the trucking industry.

"Axle tolerances exist to provide a margin of error for our trucking industry when hauling loads on Island roads," said Transportation and Public Works Minister, Don MacKinnon." By continuing to work in partnership with the industry, we are not only protecting the long-term health of Island roads but the long-term health of our trucking industry as well through increased productivity and reduced delays," said Don MacKinnon.

In recent years, there has also been increased coordination between provinces on the schedules for reinstatement of axle tolerances to simplify the process for truckers traveling between jurisdictions. Plans are underway for axle tolerances to be reinstated in New Brunswick shortly as well.

Overweight permits will continue to be issued. Further information can be obtained by contacting Highway Safety at 368-5200 or 437-8534 (24 hours).
