Prince Edward Island Tourism Minister Phillip Brown announced today that his Department has committed over $1 M this year to support the development and marketing of Island tourism products. “Through our various grant programs, Tourism PEI will be assisting about 50 projects intended to strengthen the Island’s appeal as a Tourism destination,” said Minister Brown.
The Minister explained that each year his Department receives numerous project proposals from tourism industry organizations, local communities and non-profit organizations. All of the proposals are assessed in terms of their overall tourism value.
“Tourism development grants are allocated to projects throughout the Island. The variety of projects we support is very diverse,” said Mr. Brown.
Some of the projects supported by Tourism PEI include:
• Confederation Trail Open
• PEI International Shellfish Festival
• Island Marathon
• Indian River Festival
• Acadian Vignettes
• Highland Gathering
• Georgetown, Victoria and Summerside Theatres
• Regional Marketing
• Festival of Lights
• Tour The Island Promotion
• National Senior Soccer Championships
• Senior Women’s Fastpitch Championship
• PEI Bluegrass Festival
• PEI Welcome Centres
Through its Festival and Events Assistance Program, the Department supports over 30 community-based festivals and events.
“Tourism is a very competitive business, and we have to continue to provide new reasons for vacationers to choose Prince Edward Island over many other destinations. We hope that the investments we make in our industry are successful in attracting visitors,” said Mr. Brown.
“The investment the Province makes in tourism yields substantial economic benefits for all Islanders. Last year the industry generated $350 M in economic activity and provided employment income for 14,000 Islanders. Tourism continues to be a key component of our economy; moreover, it is an industry which holds unlimited potential for us,” said Minister Brown.
Tourism PEI is the Provincial Department responsible for the development and marketing of Prince Edward Island as a premier tourism destination.
