October 6, 2006 * Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]The Department of Transportation and Public Works today advised the public of an upcoming event to promote safety on Island roads. Operation Impact is a national campaign to focus attention on safe driving practices, sponsored by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and Transport Canada as part of Road Safety Vision 2010 which is an initiative to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world by 2010. One of the objectives of Operation Impact will be to educate the public on how safe driving practices are crucial to help reduce injuries and save lives on the road. Operation Impact will take place during the weekend of October 6. Staff from local law enforcement, the RCMP and Highway Safety will be participating in the event. “We all want to see our roads be safer but that starts with each and every one of us who gets behind the wheel,” said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea. “Operation Impact is a chance to remind motorists that we all have a part to play in making Island roads safer.” Among the areas of focus for law enforcement during Operation Impact will be impaired driving, seat belt use, and aggressive driving behaviour, all of which are risk factors for motorists.Media Contact: Jeff Himelman
