Province Observes World Oceans Day

Students at the Tignish elementary school today helped launch a series of week-long activities leading up to World Oceans Day which is being celebrated on June 8. World Oceans Day has been designated by the United Nations to celebrate oceans and society’s connection to the sea.

The theme of World Oceans Day this year is “one ocean, one climate, one future.” The theme addresses the role that oceans play in maintaining the earth’s climate and the ways in which marine life is vulnerable to climate change.

The students in Tignish toured a life-size fin whale model and other displays presented by Oceans Wild, an educational organization which provides students a first-hand look at marine life. They will also be participating in a number of other oceans-related activities during the week, including artwork, poetry, crafts and stories. The event was organized by the federal and provincial departments of fishery.

Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Neil LeClair says the theme of World Oceans Day has special significance to Prince Edward Island.

“As a province surrounded by water, we are especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change,” said Mr. LeClair. “Our marine fisheries and coastal areas are being affected by rising temperatures, higher sea levels, changing chemical conditions and more frequent storms and coastal surges.”

Mr. LeClair told the students that it is important to protect and conserve the marine environment so that future generations can enjoy a healthy ocean.
