Province Moves to Improve Safety at Montague Intersection

* Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal [to May 2015]
The safety of a busy intersection near the new Montague High School will be improved with the construction of a roundabout, says Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Ron MacKinley.

“The construction of a roundabout at this intersection will improve efficiency and safety by eliminating a two-way stop and by slowing traffic,” said the minister. “The intersection sees a high number of vehicles daily and we expect that number to increase when the new school opens, as will the number of pedestrians, so changes to the intersection were inevitable.”

The new roundabout will be built during the 2010 construction season at the intersection of Route 4, the Wood Islands Hill, and Route 326, the Valleyfield Road.

Officials from the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal recently met with the town council in Montague and received its support to move ahead with the project.

The new roundabout will cost approximately $ 600,000 to build and construction will begin once the tender is awarded.

“Updating and improving rural transportation infrastructure goes hand-in-hand with the goals of the province’s Rural Action Plan,” said the minister. “This project makes important improvements to a busy rural intersection while maintaining efficiency for primary industries who move goods along the Montague/Wood Islands corridor.”
