The Department of Development and Technology has introduced a new Craft Education Bursary Program as part of its continued commitment to the Island's craft and giftware industry. The bursary program provides financial support to Island students enrolled in a recognized arts/crafts program in Canada.
The Honourable Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology, announced the new program, noting the important role education will play in the growth of the province's craft industry.
"A highly skilled workforce is the key to the success of any industry and the craft and giftware sector is no exception," said Minister Currie. "The Province believes that offering educational opportunities to Island craftspeople will not only encourage the growth of the industry, but will also enhance the exceptionally high level of quality that is synonymous with the products produced here on PEI."
Students who qualify for the Craft Education Bursary Program will be eligible for up to $10,000/year to assist with the cost of tuition, books, room and board. In order to qualify for assistance, students must commit to establishing their craft business in PEI once their training is completed.
Applicants may also qualify to receive valuable work experience through a summer work term placement with an established Island craft producer. This program is also supported by the Department through Prince Edward Island Business Development, the province's lead economic development agency.
The deadline to be considered for the Craft Education Bursary Program is July 31, 2001. Applications and additional details are available by contacting Jennifer Evans at PEI Business Development at 569-7690.
