The Department of Transportation and Public Works today advised the public of potential traffic impacts from the arrival and transport of equipment related to the newest wind farm being developed in the West Prince area.
Beginning this week and continuing over the next one to two weeks, materials will be arriving in Summerside by ship, to be used in the construction of West Prince’s newest wind farm, to be located in the West Cape area and being developed by Ventus Energy. Upon arrival, the materials will be unloaded and transported to a staging area established at Slemon Park for further assembly before final transportation to the site in the West Prince area. Depending upon the arrival times of various shipments, transport of the equipment will generally take place between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Many of the equipment pieces arriving are overweight and over dimensional, requiring special care and advance planning in the transportation of these materials. Staff from the province’s Highway Safety Division, along with the Summerside Police Department, are working closely to ensure a safe and orderly movement of materials with a minimum of traffic disruption. During the period that these materials are being transported, the traveling public may notice some traffic delays on the following routes:
• Water Street East from the Summerside waterfront to Read’s Corner;
• Route 1A between Read’s Corner and Traveller’s Rest;
• Route 2 between Traveller’s Rest and Slemon Park
“I would ask that motorists take special care as the transportation of this equipment takes place. Highway Safety staff and local law enforcement are working together to make this movement as safe as possible and I want to thank the travelling public for their cooperation during this time,” said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea.
