Highway expansion and improvement were highlighted today as the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal issued its second round of highway and bridge tenders for the upcoming construction season. Eight projects were announced with an approximate value of $13 million.
“The province, through the Build PEI campaign, is providing unprecedented investment in our highways and bridges,” says Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Ron MacKinley. “This kind of infrastructure investment is vital for the safe and efficient movement of products and people throughout our One Island Community.”
The province plans to spend $56 million this year on highway and bridge construction and improvement through its Capital Budget. Two of the projects announced today also received funding from the federal government through the Stimulus Fund. Projects in this round of tenders include:
- Expansion and rehabilitation of 1.5 km of the Trans Canada Highway in Stratford. This project is cost shared with the federal government.
- Expansion and re-alignment of the Charlottetown Perimeter Highway at Riverside Drive. This project is cost shared with the federal government.
- Rehabilitation of 4.2 km of Route 2 in Rollo Bay and 4.2 km of Route 2 in Alma/Elmsdale.
- Rehabilitation of 1.7 km of the Brush Wharf Road in Orwell Cove.
- Replacement of the Priest Pond Bridge.
- Storm Sewer installation and pavement widening on Barrett Street in Kensington.
