New provincial funding for St. Peter’s Landing and the Courthouse Theatre will help attract more visitors to the area for a longer stay, says Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley.
“The provincial government is pleased to provide funding to upgrade these important tourist attractions,” said Minister MacKinley. “Improving the infrastructure in the community will help strengthen local tourism and maintain the rich culture of the area.”
The total cost of the project is $84,000 which includes deck repairs and wheelchair ramps for St. Peter’s Landing, and a new roof for the Courthouse Theatre. Also included in the project is a new storage shed for the fire department’s rescue boat. The Island Community Fund is contributing $19,000 to the project, Skills PEI is providing $57,000 and the community is making a contribution of $8,000.
“By investing in and upgrading these properties we are helping to increase tourism and support employment in the St. Peter’s Bay area,” said Innovation and Advanced Learning Minister Allen Roach. “By using Skills PEI to assist this project, government is helping the community at the same time as it lets Islanders in need gain valuable job experience.”
“We appreciate the provincial government’s funding support for these necessary infrastructure improvements,” said Ronnie MacInnis, chairman of the St. Peter’s Community Council. “Our objective is to bring more tourists into the area, which will benefit local businesses and the community as a whole.”
