The provincial government today announced that it will be partnering with the Town of Montague on infrastructure and safety improvements to Princess Drive in the community.

The Department of Transportation and Public Works will invest $250,000 towards infrastructure and safety improvements that include construction of a storm sewer system and related work such as curbing, street widening, selected ditch infilling, installation of a paved shoulder and improved safety access to Montague Consolidated School.

"Infrastructure improvements like these help our communities grow safely. I've been lobbying for several years to see this work done and I'm very pleased to see it go ahead. I look forward to the safety, environmental and economic benefits that it will bring," said Montague-Kilmuir MLA Jim Bagnall, who announced the funding partnership on behalf of Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea.

Adequate storm water management systems are key to helping ensure that commercial and residential growth occurs in an environmentally sustainable manner. Storm water management systems enable the conveyance, temporary storage and retention of storm water for its safe and orderly disposal by a community's infrastructure system.

"This has been a priority project for Town Council. School officials and area residents have had continuing concerns with water accumulation in ditches, and the resulting safety concerns for school children. We are very appreciative of the support by the Province," said Montague Mayor Pat McGowan.

The work is scheduled to begin immediately and is projected to take approximately five to six weeks to complete. The contract was successfully tendered by Kings County Construction. The total cost of the project is approximately $250,000.
