The road to future economic growth at Slemon Park was strengthened today with the official completion of upgrades to the transportation infrastructure in the park.
The project, which will greatly enhance the utility and aesthetics of the park entrance, was reviewed today by representatives of the Province, Slemon Park Corporation and the contractor who partnered on the project.
"The transportation upgrades completed here are just another example of the Province's ongoing support for Slemon Park's ability to position itself as a world class aerospace and training facility," said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea.
The Slemon Park Corporation was formed in 1991 to assist in converting the assets of the former CFB Summerside into a world-class aerospace, manufacturing, information technology and training facility. Today, the 1500 acre park is a complete community housing accommodations, recreational facilities and retail services. Slemon Park is now home to many companies and training facilities such as: Atlantic Turbines, Tube-Fab, Helipro International, Fibre Connections Inc., and Holland College, to name just a few tenants.
"Over 1100 people live, work and learn at Slemon Park every day so naturally good transportation access is critical to our success. We're very pleased to be able to partner with the Province to improve the primary transportation access to this facility," said Ken DesRoches, President of Slemon Park Corporation.
The work undertaken included widening of the road by 25% to accommodate paved shoulders on both sides, improving safety. Additionally, milled and crushed asphalt was also applied over 1 km of the road. The value of the provincial investment was approximately $300,000 and was carried out by Curran & Briggs Ltd, of Summerside.
"We have been pleased to witness the transformation of the former air base into the vibrant business park over the last dozen years. We are very pleased to be part of this latest upgrade which will further benefit the local economy," said Brian Proffitt of Curran & Briggs.
"This investment on behalf of the Province will enhance economic growth opportunities at Slemon Park which will serve to strengthen the entire East Prince region. I'm also pleased that a local contractor was used which will further economic spinoffs within the community," said Evangeline-Miscouche MLA Wilfred Arsenault.
