A recently launched information campaign is helping Islanders become more familiar with the rules of the road for roundabouts, says Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Ron MacKinley.
“By helping Islanders familiarize themselves with the rules for roundabouts, we are helping improve the safety and efficiency of the Island’s roads,” said Minister MacKinley. “Many Island motorists are gaining the knowledge and confidence they require to use the roundabouts safely by reviewing the information we’ve provided, and I encourage all Islanders to do the same.”
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal has created a roundabout website that includes a cutting edge, flash animation roundabout tutorial which was provided by the Region of Waterloo in Ontario. The Department has also produced brochures to help ensure motorists have the information they need to pass through roundabouts safely and efficiently. It is also running radio ads across the Island that outline the basic steps for traveling through a roundabout.
“Roundabouts improve the safety and efficiency of busy intersections when used properly,” said Minister MacKinley. “Motorists are reminded to be in the proper lane on approach, to yield to traffic already in the roundabout, to not slow down to allow vehicles in, and to signal their intentions when exiting the roundabout.”
New roundabouts are being built in several locations across Prince Edward Island including two dual-lane roundabouts on the Charlottetown Perimeter Highway at Riverside Drive, which will be complete near the end of September, and two single-lane roundabouts in O’Leary and Montague.
Further information about roundabouts can be found by visiting www.gov.pe.ca/roundabouts or by picking up a roundabout brochure at any Access PEI location on the Island.
