Province to Host 2006 CCMTA Annual Meeting

* Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]
Motor transport administrators from across North America will be visiting Prince Edward Island over the next week as the province plays host to the 2006 Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) Annual Conference in Charlottetown, Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea announced in the Provincial Legislature today.

The CCMTA is a non-profit organization comprising representatives of the provincial, territorial and federal governments of Canada. Through a collective consultative process, the CCMTA makes decisions on administration and operational matters dealing with licencing, registration and control of motor vehicle transportation and highway safety. The CCMTA also includes associate members whose expertise and opinions are sought in the development of strategies and programs.

“These conferences offer valuable opportunities to exchange information and ensure consistency among the provinces and territories relating to transportation and highway safety,” said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea. “Aside from the professional benefits that conferences like this bring there is also a benefit to our tourism industry and to our local economy.”

The conference begins on Sunday, May 13 and runs through until Thursday, May 18. The theme for this year’s conference is "Road Safety: Sharing the Responsibility." This year’s conference program in Charlottetown will include workshops, presentations, and exhibitions by related industry vendors, as well as a companion program.

Prince Edward Island last hosted this conference in May 1993, attracting more than 200 participants. So far, nearly 300 delegates have confirmed their attendance for this year’s conference.

“I would like to take a moment to extend thanks to staff from my department who have put in many hours organizing this conference which I’m sure will prove quite successful,” Shea noted.
