Province to Host 2006 CCMTA Annual General Meeting

* Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]
The Department of Transportation and Public Works today announced that the 2006 Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) will be held on Prince Edward Island next May.

The CCMTA is a non-profit organization comprising representatives of the provincial, territorial and federal governments of Canada. Through a collective consultative process, the CCMTA makes decisions on administration and operational matters dealing with licencing, registration and control of motor vehicle transportation and highway safety. It also comprises associate members whose expertise and opinions are sought in the development of strategies and programs.

“Conferences like this offer valuable opportunities to exchange information and ensure consistency among the provinces and territories relating to transportation and highway safety,” said Transportation and Public Works Minister Gail Shea. ”We’re looking forward to showing off our beautiful province and hope to entice the participants to extend their visit into the Victoria Day long weekend.”

Prince Edward Island, through staff from the Department of Transportation and Public Works, has representatives serving on three standing committees of the CCMTA:

• The Standing Committee on Drivers and Vehicles is constituted for the purpose of studying, proposing and standardizing uniform measures of control for drivers and vehicles;

• The Standing Committee on Road Safety Research and Policies exists to develop expertise and action plans to prevent road collisions and reduce their consequences;

• The Standing Committee on Compliance and Regulatory Affairs develops, implements, maintains and monitors compliance activities of programs for road safety research and policies, driver and vehicle requirements, dangerous goods requirements, motor carrier operations, and provide policy direction, procedural and legislative amendments in order to achieve standardized regulation and compliance programs in all jurisdictions related to the motoring public in North America.

These committees meet twice a year to deal with a broad range of short and long term issues within their designated fields. Decisions at the standing committee level are taken by majority consensus of government members.

Minister Shea advised that the conference program will include workshops, presentations, and exhibitions by related industry vendors, as well as a companion program for spouses and families of delegates. Prince Edward Island last hosted this conference in May 1993, attracting more than 200 participants in a very successful event.
