Province Endorses the Designation of Six Properties as Natural Areas

Mitch Murphy, Minister of Technology and Environment today announced that six parcels of land across the province have been designated as Natural Areas under the Natural Areas Protection Act located in Indian River, Norboro, Brudenell, East Lake and two parcels on Courtlin Island.

"This transfer of land furthers our commitment to preserving the long-term ecological and educational values of designated land in PEI for the benefit of all Islanders," said Minister Murphy.

The 213 acres of designated land, made up of five private properties and a parcel of Crown land, includes acreage on offshore islands, sand dunes, and woodlands. Four of the properties are owned by Island Nature Trust.

Prince Edward Island continues to protect and manage natural areas that have importance for Islanders. To-date, 14,690.8 acres have been designated or proposed for designation under the Natural Areas Protection Act. The designation of natural areas contributes to the provincial government's commitment to protect seven per cent of the Province in support of the national Endangered Spaces Program.

"It is important for Islanders to recognize the role they can play in the conservation of PEI's natural heritage," added Minister Murphy. "It is hoped that more private land owners will join with the Province in protecting natural areas by donating land for designation under the Act."
