Province Endorses the Designation of Seven New Wildlife Management Areas

The Department of Technology and Environment announces that seven parcels of provincially owned property have been designated as new Wildlife Management Areas at Dingwell's Mills, Dromore, Grovepine-Big Brook, Martinvale-Corraville, Mount Hope, Mount Stewart and St. Chrysostome, and that two provincially owned properties have been added to the Southampton Wildlife Management Area.

"Wildlife Management Areas are managed by the province for a variety of uses, primarily to protect wildlife habitat," said Minister Mitch Murphy, Department of Technology and Environment, "as well as to ensure greater biodiversity in the province."

The Wildlife Management Areas will protect extensive tracts of Crown land and upper watersheds to provide protection for wildlife habitat and sustainable use of the wildlife resources. The designation of 9,714.5 acres of land to-date as Wildlife Management Areas contributes to the government's commitment to protect seven per cent of the province in support of the World Wildlife Fund Endangered Spaces Challenge.

The Fish and Wildlife Division of the Department of Technology and Environment will be inviting community input and participation in the maintenance of these sites.
