Health and Social Services Minister Jamie Ballem advised today that plans are now in place to establish replacement beds for Sunset Lodge residents.
The minister advised residents and families at a meeting last night that Government has approved the establishment of 32 new beds at Atlantic Baptist Home, 10 at the Garden Home, 10 at Beach Grove Home, and 5 at the Prince Edward Home.
The transfer of residents to the new locations is expected to begin in November to allow for construction of the new facilities and to maintain staffing levels at Sunset Lodge during the period leading up to the transfer.
Minister Ballem said that the uncertainty created by the closure has been difficult for residents, families and staff. "Residents have grown very attached to the Lodge and family members want to be sure that their loved ones will continue to receive quality care," said the minister. "We appreciate the patience and support of families and staff while we have been evaluating proposals for new facilities."
Douglas MacKenzie, president of the Private Nursing Homes Association, advised that operators have been pleased with the opportunity to work in partnership with government to reach an effective solution as quickly as possible. "We are confident that the new facilities will meet and surpass standards set out by the licensing board," he said.
A transition team will remain in place to keep residents informed and assist with the relocation of residents. Team members include representatives of the Department of Health and Social Services, Queens Region Health, and Sunset Lodge.
"This has been a very collaborative effort under difficult circumstances and I am very pleased with the progress to ensure that Sunset Lodge residents have safe and secure homes for the future," stated Minister Ballem.
