Major improvements to Prince Edward Island’s most important intra-provincial highway during the 2008 construction season will mean safer and more efficient roads for all Islanders for years to come.

This week the province’s Minister of Transportation and Public Works, the Honourable Ron MacKinley, announced calls to tender for upgrades to almost nine kilometres of Route 2: Veterans Memorial Highway. These upgrades will take place on several sections of Route 2 including Five Houses in Kings County, Mount Stewart in Queens County and Mount Pleasant in Prince County, to name a few.

“These upgrades will go a long way to improving the province’s most important piece of road,” says Minister MacKinley. “This shows the Provincial Government is committed to the safety of Islanders, and it shows that we are committed to efficient travel for those who do business on the Island.”

The estimated cost of the upgrades announced today is 7.5 million dollars. As construction season approaches, several more projects are expected to be announced that will be cost shared with the Federal Government.

“Our continued partnership with Ottawa allows this department to accomplish goals that would otherwise be many years down the road,” says Minister MacKinley. “We look forward to continued support from our Federal counterparts as we strive to make Island roads some of the safest in the country.”
