Province Announces Investment to Support Public Transit Development in Charlottetown

Premier's Office
Premier Pat Binns today announced details of an investment made by the Province of Prince Edward Island to support the development of a public transit system in the City of Charlottetown.

The province will provide an incentive in the form of a PST rebate on capital purchases made by the City of Charlottetown to develop a public transit system. This rebate will help defray the cost of items such as buses and other equipment purchased in 2005-2006. The PST incentive will be up to a maximum amount of $120,000.

“A successful public transit system can bring many benefits to a community, including economic, social and, of course, environmental benefits. This investment will support the efforts of the City of Charlottetown to help bring about a successful public transit system for the people of Charlottetown,” said Premier Binns.

This new investment builds upon previous support the province has provided to the City of Charlottetown as it has developed its public transit system. This included in-kind support such as staff resources, as well as technical assistance and analysis.

“Developing a public transit system for the people of Charlottetown has been a priority of ours for some time,” said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. “Today’s investment by the Province will help take this project to the next level by assisting in putting together the kind of infrastructure we need to get public transit rolling in the capital. We welcome the support from the province to do that.”
