Province Announces Formation Of Millennium Committee

The Honourable Wes MacAleer, Minister of Community Services and Attorney General, announced today the formation of a Provincial Millennium Committee to lead the organization of a series of community-based millennium celebrations across Prince Edward Island.

The Island Millennium Project is a partnership of public and private organizations dedicated to staging interactive events across the province that bring families together to celebrate the new millennium and acknowledge PEI's unique position as the birthplace of Canada. Organizers stress the millennium celebrations present a unique opportunity for Islanders to embrace positive attitudes about the next millennium and hope for the future. The theme for the millennium celebrations will focus on, "PEI 2000: Inspired by our past ... embracing our future."

"I am pleased to announce that a planning committee of volunteers from across the Island will guide the PEI 2000 millennium activities," said Minister MacAleer. Members of the planning committee include: Robert Arsenault, Meadowbank; Donald Matheson, Oyster Bed Bridge; Edith MacLean, Miscouche; Kerri Wynne MacLeod, Montague; and James W. Richards, Murray Harbour. Mr. M.T. (Bud) Whelan, of Charlottetown will chair the planning committee.

Additional details about the Millennium program will be announced by the planning committee in the coming weeks and months.
