Three new projects approved under the Island Community Fund will help support social and economic development in eastern Kings County, says Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Neil LeClair.
“The eastern Kings area of the province offers significant potential for development through its strong resource base and available labour force,” said Mr. LeClair. “The projects which we are announcing today will help these communities offer the facilities and services which will help to enhance further development opportunities.”
Two fire departments in the area have received funding. The Eastern Kings Fire Department will purchase eight new breathing devices at a total cost of $30,940. The Island Community Fund will contribute $23,201 to the project.
The Town of Souris has renovated the fire hall at a total cost of $196,800. The Island Community Fund provided a total of $147,600.
The Keir Gallery/Souris Show Hall has renovated the old movie theatre and added retail space for a total cost of $27,211, with $13,000 coming from the Island Community Fund.
“I commend those who have undertaken these much-needed projects to serve the residents of eastern Kings,” said Innovation and Advanced Learning Minister Allan Campbell, MLA for Souris-Elmira. “I look forward to continuing to work with the people of eastern Kings to pursue new opportunities to make this area an even better place in which to live and work.”
Mr. LeClair said he welcomes further proposals to help stimulate new developments in the area to diversify the economy. “The Rural Action Plan has identified the need for special measures in some areas of the province to ensure they participate fully in the creation of jobs and growth,” said Mr. LeClair.
The Island Community Fund is a six-year, $27.5 million program to address infrastructure needs in rural communities.
