Programs Introduce Youth to IT

Two programs are being offered by Technology PEI to give youth an opportunity to learn more about information technology.

"Youth of a Digital Age" teaches students about the techniques of designing a web page; it will be co-sponsored by the Morell Region Community Learning Centre. Approximately 24 young people will be hired to run bi-weekly workshops at four schools: Colonel Gray High, Souris Regional High, Morell Regional High and Bluefield High.

Students from elementary, secondary and high school levels will be taught web design skills in order to design a site based on a subject of their choice. Upon completion, family, friends and other guests will be invited to a site launching to witness the final product.

More than 140 youth and young adults took part in the program last year.

Those interested in participating in the program, should contact Charlotte Cudmore at (902) 961-2642 or by email at mrclc@isn.net.

The "IT Generation" program promotes the creation of IT clubs in communities interested in helping youth gain technology skills.

Grants will be provided to community groups to assist them in the purchasing of equipment. To be eligible, organizations must demonstrate a commitment to youth, have the presence of a strong board of directors and have a person or group who will be responsible for the IT club. The program will be run by Digital Innovations of Tignish who will provide basic training to any of the sites who have purchased equipment through the program.

A provincial IT Generation program web site has been created at http://tigcap.peicaps.org/itgeneration, and the individual clubs must complete their own web sites.

Since the programs initial roll out last fall, 27 IT clubs have been created across the province.

This year's program will also allow existing clubs to apply for support funding for web site development and software/hardware upgrades.

Applications are available online at http://www.techpei.com under the Community Initiatives link. Deadline for applications for both the Start Up and Support Fund is Friday November 2, 2001 at 3:00 pm.
