The Honourable Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology, announced today that his department is reinstating the Web Presence Program. The program, which was introduced in 2000, is designed to encourage Prince Edward Island businesses to develop web sites.
"The Internet is a valuable business tool and having a web site is becoming a necessity in today's global marketplace," said Minister Currie. "By helping Prince Edward Island businesses establish a presence on the Internet, we're assisting them in reaching new markets and planting the seeds for growth."
The Web Presence Program ran for six months in 2000. During that time, 232 applications were approved, representing funding assistance of $55,000. The program is sponsored by Technology PEI and PEI Business Development.
"More and more Prince Edward Island companies are establishing web sites and promoting themselves to a broader audience," said Minister Currie. "This indicates that our business community is in tune with the demands of today's market. Despite these strides, it's important that even more Island companies consider the value of having a web presence. This is particularly crucial as we move into more export markets."
Through the Web Presence Program, companies can receive 40 per cent of the costs associated with establishing a web site, to a maximum of $500 per small business. All Prince Edward Island businesses and industry associations presently without a web presence can apply for assistance.
