Oyster growers can apply for support to help them increase the Island’s oyster production.
Applications are being accepted for the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries’ successful Quality Oyster Aquaculture Program.
Growers may now submit project proposals that will result in the increased production of cultured quality oysters from oyster leases on Prince Edward Island.
“We want to see the oyster industry continue to thrive on Prince Edward Island and this program will help strengthen production abilities for at least 20 different growers across the province,” Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Alan McIsaac said. “Oysters are an important part of expanding our reputation as Canada’s Food Island, so we hope that his renewed partnership with our Island growers will help expand this important industry.”
The program will be accessible to more growers in relation to the amount of funding available this year following consultation with the Island Oyster Growers Group. The group recommended a reduction in the funding amount per project to a maximum of $5,000 down from $10,000 per project last year. The amount of funding available remains $100,000.
Applications will be accepted for a six-week period followed by a random draw selection to determine the order in that they will be reviewed. Deadline for submissions is Friday, December 2 at 5 p.m.
The aquaculture industry is an important economic contributor to the province. It contributes more than $80 million impact to the local economy and provides more than 2,000 jobs each year.
