Agriculture and Forestry Minister Eric Hammill today released a series of profiles on small scale agricultural opportunities for Prince Edward Island. The profiles are intended as a reference for producers and other rural entrepreneurs, and are based on ideas requiring an investment of between $50,000 and $400,000. They were prepared by staff of the Agriculture Division in cooperation with industry representatives.
"The profiles were developed as part of our efforts to diversify the agriculture and food industry and to create jobs in rural communities," said Mr. Hammill. "We believe there are many viable ideas that can be implemented on a small scale, providing a good return on investment and labour." He said there are many niche marketing opportunities for high quality, high value speciality products.
The profiles outline opportunities for rhubarb, broccoli and ryegrass seed production and for beekeeping operations. Further profiles will be released in the near future for apple production, agri-tourism, fish farming and swine breeding stock. Other potential opportunities continue to be assesses in cooperation with industry organizations.
The profiles are intended to document a general business case and provide potential investors with enough information on which to decide whether to further investigate the opportunity. Individuals or companies will need to develop their own business plan suited to their particular situation and market opportunities.
"Small scale agriculture is an essential component in the strengthening and development of rural communities and improved employment opportunities for all Islanders," said Mr. Hammill. "We are confident these profiles will result in new agricultural businesses throughout Prince Edward Island."
Copies of the profiles are available at Regional Services Centres, Island Information Service, the Canada/PEI Business Centre and on the department's website at www.gov.pe.ca/af/agweb.
