Prince Edward Island’s Fall Flavours Festival Expands into a Month-Long Food Showcase

* Tourism and Culture [to May 2015]
Prince Edward Island’s own Chef Michael Smith of the famed Chef At Home Food Network series is playing host to Prince Edward Island’s newly expanded Fall Flavours festival. The famous chef, together with other Island favourites, team up to offer over 250 interactive culinary and cultural events taking place in communities across Prince Edward Island from September 3 to September 30, 2010. The expansion of the festival has been driven not only by Islanders wishing to showcase their high quality culinary products and events, but also by consumers showing a real propensity to travel to, and attend, food festivals.

“Over the past year, we have been working with our regional partners to expand PEI’s culinary product offering,” said Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Vessey. “Much work has gone into developing a unique Island-wide festival experience that encompasses our harvest, culinary delights, music and artisans. With more than 250 culinary events in one month, there is something for everyone to enjoy!”

This year, the Fall Flavours Festival has a particularly eclectic mix of culinary activities ranging from an “Applelicious Festival” in the west, “Festin Acadien - avec homard” in Evangeline, a “Feast by the Sea” in Victoria, a culinary “Picnic in the Park” on the north shore, “Farm Day in the City” in Charlottetown, to “Chef on Board” in the east.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Prince Edward Island to showcase its high-quality seafood and Chef Michael Smith has been a great ambassador for the Island,” said the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. “Great PEI seafood and a great PEI chef equals a tasty world-class meal.”

The variety and imagination of ways to present the harvest, culture and music is amazing. You can join local hosts and pick potatoes, catch lobsters or harvest oysters. The educationally infused experiences provided by Fall Flavours will allow visitors to enjoy food from the source, mingle with a local host, sample or indulge in a tasting, or experiment with a cooking opportunity.

“Prince Edward Island is a food lovers paradise, especially during harvest season when the fruits of our many passionate artisans come to fruition,” describes Chef Michael Smith. “It is the perfect time to visit, share our flavours and enjoy the many unique events of the festival.”
