September 7, 2010 * Agriculture and Forestry [to May 2015]Prince Edward Islanders have once again demonstrated their support for local food by winning the Eat Atlantic Challenge, says Agriculture Minister George Webster. Prince Edward Island won the challenge with the highest per capita participation in the region. “I want to thank Islanders for the tremendous support they have shown to our local producers,” said Mr. Webster. “Events such as the buy local campaign and the current Fall Flavours festival reflect the growing awareness of the benefits of local food to our health, our environment and our economy.” The annual Eat Atlantic Challenge is sponsored by Co-op Atlantic. The challenge encouraged consumers to eat only local or Atlantic foods on September 2nd. Mr. Webster joined the challenge along with other Atlantic agriculture ministers. “Eating only local and Atlantic food for one day shows how easy it is to support local products throughout the year,” said Mr. Webster.
