The Volunteer Recognition Award deadline has been extended to October 31, 2003. The awards will be presented at a gala in late November to seven Islanders who give unselfishly to others, without thought to receiving recognition nor the time commitment to the cause.
Government announced the new award program in the November 2002 Throne Speech as a follow-up to the 2001 International Year of the Volunteer.
"Every day we see them, women, men, youth, collecting door-to-door, helping others in their community, coaching our family or just being a friend," said Honourable Elmer MacFadyen, Minister responsible for Volunteers. "The Volunteer Recognition Award is the kind of award that recognizes individuals who give freely of themselves to benefit our communities."
