The Prince Edward Island Provincial Winter Games are set to begin on Friday, February 2, 2001. The Games will be hosted at locations throughout West Prince. The 2001 Games will feature the best athletes from across Prince Edward Island competing in thirteen sports.
"I am pleased to see the Provincial Winter Games come to West Prince," says the Honourable Gail A. Shea, Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs and Minister responsible for Recreation and Sport. "These games offer an opportunity for Island athletes to experience the competitive spirit of sport. They also stimulate enthusiasm for amateur sport and develop a sense of regional and provincial pride."
The 2001 Provincial Winter Games are jointly hosted by the communities of O'Leary, Alberton and Tignish. The Games would not be possible without the efforts of close to 200 volunteers and officials.
West Prince has many winter activities to attract visitors. While enjoying the games, visitors will also enjoy the wonderful restaurants in the area. The Mill River Resort, the location of the athletes pavilion, offers both indoor and outdoor activities for families, including cross-country skiing and skating. Inside the resort, families will enjoy visiting the aquaplex and gym facilities.
West Prince also offers excellent sporting facilities, many of which will play host to a variety of sporting events as part of the games.
West Prince has a history of hosting successful sporting events, including the Philadelphia Flyers Training Camp, National Boxing Championships and the National Midget Championships.
"On behalf of the Government of Prince Edward Island, I would like to offer congratulations to the host committee and to the many volunteers. You have worked hard and will soon see the rewards of that work," says Minister Shea. "I would like to extend a invitation to all Islanders to visit West Prince this weekend to take in some of the activities and sporting events planned for the 2001 Provincial Winter Games."
Minister Shea also extends her best wishes to all Island youth participating in the games this week-end.
The title sponsor for the 2001 Provincial Winter Games is PEI Mutual.
