Prince Edward Island Medal Of Merit Recipients Announced

The 1996 recipients of the new Prince Edward Island Medal of Merit were announced today by the Chancellor of the Medal, His Honour Lieutenant Governor Gilbert R. Clements, and by the chairperson of the Medal Advisory Council, Mrs. Kay Lewis.

The six Islanders selected to receive the honour are:

Reverend Charles Cheverie, Charlottetown

Dr. George Dewar, O'Leary

Dr. Kent Ellis, Hunter River

James T. Hogan, Charlottetown

Dr. Ulric Poirier, Summerside

Honourable Marion L. Reid, Hope River

Premier Catherine Callbeck established the Medal of Merit last year as a means of recognizing those Islanders who have shown individual excellence or outstanding leadership in the community and in their chosen profession or occupation.

It is the highest honour that can be accorded a citizen of the province and is awarded annually following a public nomination process. Recipients are recommended to the Premier by an independent eleven-person Advisory Council.

Forty-three individuals were nominated to receive the award this year. "The public response to the call for nominations was excellent," said Mrs. Lewis, "and it was a very difficult task selecting a few recipients from among so many remarkable people."

Medals will be presented by the Lieutenant Governor at a special investiture ceremony at Government House, Charlottetown, on Tuesday, August 27th.
