This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Provincial Library Service in Prince Edward Island. To celebrate this milestone, community libraries across the province are inviting Islanders to Look at Us Now and participate in a variety of activities during Public Library Week October 20-26.
The Honourable Elmer MacFadyen, Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, invites Islanders to visit their local public library. "Our public libraries are alive and thriving in our communities, contributing to community strengthening and development through a wide variety of program and services. A visit to the library may include checking your E-mail, borrowing a DVD or the latest bestselling book, participating in a children's story time or a reading by the Island's Poet Laureate, John Smith."
In towns and villages across the province, library staff are celebrating library week with a range of programs and activities. A visit to the library Web site at www.library.pe.ca will provide details of activities in each of the Island's 26 public libraries.
"The library card is the key to the wide collection of resources available at the library. It is needed to use the internet and our electronic databases as well as to borrow and request books from other libraries," said Allan Groen, Provincial Librarian. "In recognition of the library card, and to thank our library members, every person who presents a library card or signs up for a card, during library week, will receive a gift (while quantities last)."
Library Week is a partnership between the PEI Provincial Library Service and Nova Scotia Provincial Libraries.
